- Tread Depth: UK law requires a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre’s width and around its entire circumference. Anything less is illegal.
- Penalties: You can be fined up to £2,500 and receive 3 penalty points on your license per illegal tyre. That means you could lose your license if all four are bald.
- How to Check: A quick way to check your tread depth is with the 20p test. Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread is likely below the legal limit and needs to be inspected immediately.

What do the numbers on my tyre mean?
They define the tyre’s size and specifications. For a tyre marked 205/55 R16 91V, it means: 205mm wide, a profile height of 55% of the width, 16-inch wheel diameter, a load index of 91, and a V speed rating.
Do I need wheel alignment with new tyres?
It’s highly recommended. Wheel alignment (tracking) ensures your wheels are set to the manufacturer’s specification. This prevents your new tyres from wearing unevenly and prematurely, saving you money in the long run.
Can you repair a puncture?
Yes, in many cases, a puncture can be safely repaired if it’s located in the central tread area and meets British Standard BSAU159. We will never repair a puncture in the tyre’s sidewall, as it’s unsafe.
